Cost of Living: Portugal vs Spain
Two neighbours, one common question: which one is gentler on your wallet? Here is an honest comparison using the very same figures as our country pages, where each number is listed with its source and year — so you can check it yourself.
The short answer
Day-to-day life is a little cheaper in Portugal, but salaries there are also noticeably lower. Spain costs slightly more and pays noticeably more. If you earn your money remotely (from abroad), Portugal stretches it further. If you will work locally, Spain's higher salaries often cancel out its higher prices.
A few honest caveats
- These are national averages. Lisbon and Madrid cost far more than smaller cities like Braga or Valencia.
- Rent in both capitals has risen quickly in recent years — always check current local listings before deciding.
- Figures come from 2024–2025 sources; the source and year for each one are listed on the Portugal and Spain country pages linked below.
